The Rs

Right before the new year--when I was figuring out how I was going to get the new year off to a good start--I had a revelation:  I dislike the word routine.  It sounds so unimaginative and choreful.  What I do like is the word ritual (no doubt that is the Catholic in me).

Ritual makes things sound so much more important and meaningful.  Rituals are ceremonial.  Rituals matter.

Changing the word routine to ritual on my daily to-do list has transformed my attitude toward those tasks completely.  Now I am now ready and even eager to get to them, and the feeling of accomplishment after they are done is almost like a sacrament.

  1. I agree, routine sounds rather boring and don't even get me started on "schedule", I hate that word (and t's an S word anyway ;). I like ritual too --must be the Catholic thing. Another "r" word I like is rhythm. I think it describes well how we do things around here. We have a family rhythm punctuated by daily rituals. :)

    1. OOOOOOOOO, I like the word rhythm! Thank you for sharing that. I've been looking for a new way to reframe the idea of "schedule", in terms of how we move through our weeks, months, seasons. The word rhythm fits perfectly. Thank you for visiting my new blog, and thank you for leaving this comment.

For the other readers--Michele is the heroine behind the beautiful blog banner. She is a dear friend who I am so blessed to have in my life.

  2. Yes! And my teacher has taught me in the Taoist tradition that all "work" can be "meditation." That helps me. "Don't task, Leisa!" He says. Listen to your body, take a break (if I don't...then it becomes work). It's a part of our Puritan ethic origins in our culture. When mowing his lawn feels like work, he stops. Right in the middle of the lawn. :) Love this post and your new blog, wonderRo. xo
